EPA-0922: Brown (grizzly) bear, Ursus arctos, is found along the coastal areas of Alaska. Larger than the barren ground grizzly of the interior, these rank among the largest land carnivores. Here at McNeil River State Game Sanctuary the brown bears congregate each spring and summer to feed on migrating salmon in Mikfik Creek and the McNeil River. This particular female, Teddy, has been a subject of mine for a number of years and was part of an assignment I did for my article in April '89 issue of Smithsonian Magazine (both text and pictures).
